On February 5th 2017, Maya-Youth in Performing Arts launched our inaugural ‘Race to Raise’ event. 22 teams of 4 participants raced around Sydney in a gruelling but exciting quest to find famous landmarks and locations based on clues from movies and books. A hot summer day could not stifle the intense competition and determination of all the teams as they strove for victory. After more than 4 hours of racing, team “Leftover Pizza” (Sai Sankare Siritharan, Athiththa Satchithanandha, Juhee Jolapara, Kalyan Raguram) clinched victory in just the final minutes, winning $1200 in travel vouchers.
However, the ultimate success of the day was measured in the extraordinary amount of money raised by our participants. An incredible total of $15840 was raised for Palmera Projects, who work in creating sustainable livelihoods for villages in rural Sri Lanka. Thank you and congratulations to all our participants for raising such an enormous amount.
Race to Raise 2017 marked a new and exciting chapter for MAYA Youth in Performing Arts as we continue in our mission to inspire change and contribute to charity. Our aim was to rewrite the way we make change, and we hope that this successful event will lay the framework for an annual day of fun and fundraising that can only grow bigger. Keep an eye out for our 2018 event – we hope you can join us.
We would like to thank UTS Tamil Society for their invaluable partnership, without which this event would not have been possible.
